Public Holidays

Most holidays in the Netherlands relate to the Christian calendar. A famous local holiday, celebrated on 28 August, commemorates the lifting of the Siege of Groningen in 1672.

It is known as ‘Gronings Ontzet’ or ‘Bomm’n Berend’, after Berend van Galen, the Bishop of Münster who besieged Groningen, causing a lot of damage and who then unexpectedly lifted the siege.
