Groningen and innovation go hand in hand. There is a reason why Groningen is on the map as one of the most important innovative regions in the Netherlands.
The city owes this to the presence of a university, a college of advanced education and the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), as well as a large number of knowledge intensive companies established in Groningen. Moreover, innovation has been one of the spearheads of economic policy in the Province of Groningen for many years.
The importance of innovation has not gone unnoticed for the municipality of Groningen. On the pretext of ‘Het Akkoord van Groningen’ (the Groningen agreement), the municipality and the University of Groningen, UMCG University Medical Center Groningen and the Hanze University Groningen are investing half a billion in innovation and knowledge infrastructure in the city over the coming years. A considerable share of the amount will be spent on innovation in the area of energy, ICT, life sciences and nanotechnology. Money is reserved for the development and support of knowledge intensive activities also.
