Energy Delta Institute
The Energy Delta Institute is home to scientists of the University of Groningen, collaborating closely with organisations like Gasunie, GasTerra, GazProm, Shell, TU Delft, the Netherlands Energy Research Centre and the German energy giant RWE.
Energy Delta Research Centre
At the Energy Delta Research Centre the University of Groningen has clustered all its energy research activities. Its goal is to develop expertise in the transition from fossil fuels to sustainable energy. The centre is working on technology as well as other aspects of gas production, transport and trade. One of its activities is setting up the Gas Research and Sustainability Programme. This programme links the traditional gas world to a future when new forms of energy will become increasingly important. The total investment required for this programme is 44 million euro to be financed by the provincial government, knowledge institutions, businesses and the municipality.
Energy Delta Convention
Since 2005 the University of Groningen has organised the international Energy Delta Convention, attracting energy experts from all over the world.
Energy Knowledge Centre
The Energy Knowledge Centre of the Hanze University Groningen, University of Applied Sciences focuses on creating knowledge that can be applied in the business world. Professionals who will use these applications are also trained here. For this training the well-equipped energy lab set up jointly by Hanze University Groningen, Gasunie and TNO-ICT is used.
RenQi
In the research institute RenQi (Chinese for people and energy) the Hanze University Groningen and the University of Groningen are developing a ‘smart power’ energy system in collaboration with Gasunie, GasTerra, TNO, the Netherlands Energy Research Centre and others. This institute focuses on developing the technology as well as the software and the legal and logistical expertise required. A laboratory setup is used to realise small scale examples of decentralised energy production. The results will be applied on the Zernike Campus in 2012.
Zernike Science Energy Transition Park
At the Zernike Campus major sections of the University of Groningen and Hanze University Groningen are located. All new buildings on this campus must be energy-efficient and use a variety of sustainable energy sources. The campus is an ideal testing ground for the ‘smart power’ system developed in the RenQi lab. It is also an ideal place for Groningen to showcase its energy-related innovations.
